Cyventine — Quit Program

Product design, Development, Health

Cytisine is a quit-smoking course: 100 tablets over 25 days, stepping down from six doses a day to one. Get the timing wrong and it fails. I designed and built Cyventine, its companion app, with the website and campaign.

The problem

A schedule that changes five times in 25 days

People quitting are already under strain. An app that nags or loses track makes it harder.

The cytisine schedule

Six doses a day down to one

Days 1–3Every 2 hours6 a day
Days 4–12Every 2.5 hours5 a day
Days 13–16Every 3 hours4 a day
Days 17–20Every 5 hours3 a day
Days 21–24Every 6 hours2 a day

Most have tried something already, so the app must earn its place beside patches and gum. Sources: ABS and Roy Morgan; Project Lucky, U&A, Palladium, April 2026, 650 participants.

My role

End to end

Through Owlry, I did the design, the iOS and Android build, the website and the campaign.

The process

The schedule is the product

I treated the schedule as the product, designing for missed doses, late starts and moving the first dose.

How much the app should know

I weighed three options against compliance, security and launch time.

Full user accounts, in the app

Managed in the app.

Benefits

  • Full journey tracking
  • Email nurture
  • Rich insights

Considerations

  • Highest compliance burden
  • Sensitive data stored
  • Extra security
  • Longer App Store approval

Website-managed accounts

Managed on the website.

Benefits

  • Some user tracking
  • Email automation
  • Faster app release

Considerations

  • Website security needed
  • Ongoing account management
  • Compliance still applies
Recommended

Anonymous analytics

Anonymous events and trends only.

Benefits

  • Fastest to market
  • Lowest compliance overhead
  • Simpler security
  • Group insights, like how many reset their journey

Considerations

  • No individual tracking
  • No email nurture
  • No personalised data
I recommended anonymous analytics: fastest to market, lowest compliance burden.

The solution

Kind about a missed dose

The day, at a glance

The day rolls at midnight. Reminders carry their label, “dose 3 of 5”, so people always know where they are.

No renumbering, no nagging

A missed dose is quietly dropped, never hidden by renumbering, and the next keeps its label. After day 25 the app marks the journey complete and stops.

One rule with teeth

Nothing leaves the phone

In version one, the schedule, progress and settings stay on the device.

The website around it

The website explains the course before the download.

Answers up front, and articles for the hard days.

Campaign banners and an in-pharmacy display, where most people first meet the course.

The impact

Ready for release

Built with Ionic React, Capacitor, React 19 and TypeScript for iOS 15+ and Android 7+, it is ready for TestFlight and a signed Android bundle, pending clinical sign-off.

Reflection

Design and code in step

Building it myself kept the logic and interface in step. Every design rule had a test in the code.
