Arthritis Australia — Digital Platform

Product Design, Design System, Accessibility

Arthritis Australia is a not-for-profit charity and the country’s peak arthritis consumer body. It supports people with arthritis and their families, and raises awareness with the community and leaders in business, industry and government.

Design System

I began by teaching the development team the benefits of a design system and leading workshops to plan the implementation. I then guided them on using it sustainably and extending components for their product.

The integration succeeded because of my approach: implementing all HTML, CSS and JavaScript as intended for each component, rather than applying only the presentational layer over a legacy interface, which causes rework and defects.

Under my guidance, the system went in with minimal accessibility and interface defects, so the product reached customers faster.

Accessibility

With an enthusiastic team, including management and stakeholders, we drove accessibility end to end. Requirements became part of the definition of ready in forward modelling sprints, and feature-specific requirements became part of the definition of done in development sprints. Frequent accessibility testing led the development and testing teams to adopt assistive technologies.

Accessibility in every sprint

  1. Definition of ready

    Set during forward modelling sprints.

  2. In the sprint

    Requirements specific to each feature.

  3. Definition of done

Features close only when requirements are met.

  4. Testing

    Frequent testing with assistive technology.

A team focused on accessibility substantially reduced the defects found in testing, and fixed issues within the active sprint. Driving accessibility throughout the app is my primary achievement, and the whole team now understands why it matters.
